2010 - Recap of Goals - Better Luck This Year!

Too bad the year didn't end in July.  I did much better the first half of the year.  2011's Goals are coming up and they'll be very simple!

2010 Family Goals

Read Preach My Gospel as a family - We made it about half way through and then went back to reading the scriptures.

Have Family Prayers Together Every Night and Have Prayers with Each Child before they leave for school each morning. - Hit & Miss - We do fairly well when we get to bed on time so we can get up on time but we're not consistent enough with bedtimes.

Have a well planned Family Home Evening each week - we had family home evening every week although it wasn't always well planned.

Family Fun Activity Every Week - not even close to every week.

Do something active as a family at least once a week - Perhaps one or two weeks out of the year :(

Eat at least 7 meals Together As A Family each week - We came close to averaging this amount but some weeks it was 10 or 12 meals and other weeks only 2 or 3 meals.

Get the kids to bed on time on school nights - Bad - been really bad about this

Encourage the kids to limit their Media & Video Gaming time - Not so good on this either. They get off the computer then get on the DS then get off the DS and watch TV.

Chores – Teach them to work - Brian is the only reason this goal was even close to being met

2010 Personal Goals

Kneel in prayer each morning and night - I started off so well and slacked as the year went on.

Read my scriptures every day - Same thing as my prayers

Attend the Temple at least once every month - I made it at least 12 times but the majority was during the first few months of the year.

Read the Ensign cover to cover each month - Still working on this, I'm behind but will get them read

Read at least 100 books - I read 250 books

Spend at least 2 days a week at home without leaving to run errands or grocery shop - I did fairly well on this but now need to add stay at home and stay off the computer!

Lose the 20 lbs I gained in 2009 - Gaining 5 lbs doesn't count

Blog daily and keep in touch with extended family and friends - I turned into a weekly blogger and didn't stay in touch very well.

Make time to Be Still & Ponder each day - Started off good then did horribly

Start doing family history work - Thanks to my Aunt Judy's motivation I did start doing family history work - now to continue.

Weekly date with Brian - Fairly good on this one, it's nice that the kids are all in school so we can go out to lunch

Weekly Wrap Up

Why is it that all to often the areas of my life I plan to focus on and become better at are the areas I end up struggling with the most? I start out strong and doing well and then life falls apart & I too often I end up worse than when I started.
I know one of my problems is I have not been using a planner or a to do list. I can't seem to find a system that works for me. I think I made a mistake a couple years ago when I move my main calendar from my planner to the wall in the kitchen. It's not portable and there is no good way to keep track of a to do list. And going digital doesn't work for me because if I sit down at the computer to check a to do list & calendar online I also check email, blogs, goodreads, facebook, etc., etc., etc.
I have a very obsessive all or nothing type personality. I throw my head and heart into something and then end up out of balance in other areas of my life. Stages of my life can be chronicled by the thing I was obsessed with at the time. Here are a few examples:
Family Home Evening packets: When Brett was just a toddler I started making family home evening packets. I literally had at least 150 FHE lessons in files. Most of them colored, cut out, laminated. I spent forever making packets and enjoyed it. But I RARELY used them. I much prefer opening the Friend magazine and reading from that on Monday nights. With the invention of the internet FHE lessons were available at the click on the mouse so I eventually gave away all but my favorite half dozen lessons.
Scrapbooking: Again when Brett was young I started scrapbooking. I spent endless hours scrapbooking. For years I enjoyed this hobby. At least until I kept having children and I realized what I'd started and would never be able to continue. Brett has 6 full scrapbooks for his first 3 years of life. Bryce & Kim each have 3 or 4. Then came Bradley - poor Bradley is my child that was born and then went to 2nd grade if his scrapbooks are an indication of his life. By the time Kylie came along the world had gone digital and I had no desire to ever scrapbook again. A computer crash means that most of her first 2 years of life are non existent as far as photos go.
And so it goes - one hobby or obsession after another. Blogging, Facebook, Family History, Reading, Twilight, Exercise, Organizing, Couponing, Healthy Eating. etc., etc., etc. Some of the obsession last for mere weeks others for years but ultimately I have burned out, given up, moved on, lost interest or found something else.
Current obsession - Reading but I'm about burned out. 126 books since January 1st. That's a lot of reading. I've always loved to read and read a lot but I've already read more books than I did in all of 2009.
So what is the cure for someone like me? How do I find and keep better balance in my life?
I was listening to Christian music on the radio this afternoon and the chorus to one song said something about today being a new day. It struck me that all I can do is keep plugging away and doing the best I can each day. So I decided to start fresh this week at doing my best to find balance in all areas of my life. I decided to pull out my 2010 goals that I've not really looked at since January. So here we go...

Read Preach My Gospel as a family
Gave up on this and went back to the scriptures. It just wasn't the same as scripture study. And with summer we've not been very structured: up late, sleeping in. Brian suggested today we need some kind of alarm to go off each evening to remind us to start bedtime. The sun going down just doesn't work in the summer because it goes down too late. So this week at least 5 days of scripture study as a family.
Have Family Prayers Together Every Night and Have Prayers with Each Child before they leave for school each morning.
Lack of structure means lack of family prayer.
Have a well planned Family Home Evening each week
We do have FHE every Monday. At least that is a habit we haven't lost.
Family Fun Activity Every Week
We have lots of fun around here but not always as an entire family and too often with friends involved.
Do something active as a family at least once a week
Still haven't done this at all this year and I'm not going to start worrying about it this week!
Eat at least 7 meals Together As A Family each week
Epic fail. I think getting back to meals around the table will really help with things like scriptures and prayers. Brian asked me last night if we could have dinner as a family but I was tired and the kids had been snacking all afternoon so I had no desire to cook a meal that wouldn't be eaten. Meals make such a difference I'm going to go back to Menu-plan Monday and plan out meals for this week.
Get the kids to bed on time on school nights
How about get the kids to bed before midnight? It's summer but we've got to start getting them to bed earlier!
Encourage the kids to limit their Media & Video Gaming time
Bradley, Bryce & Kylie need my attention here. Kim & Brett do well on their own.
Chores – Teach them to work
I need to start inspecting because their version of chores done and my version are not the same.

Now for the personal goals
Kneel in prayer each morning and night
Most days but I should change it to meaningful, heartfelt prayer not rushed just pray because you are supposed to pray kind of prayers.
Read my scriptures every day
I've been reading the Conference Ensign the past week as my scriptures but need to get back to the BofM.
Attend the Temple at least once every month
I was going at least 2 or 3 times a month until the start of May and then I haven't been since. I'll get back this week.
Read the Ensign cover to cover each month
Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr & June are done. Almost done with the conference Ensign.
Read at least 100 books
Goal accomplished already which is not necessarily a good thing.
Spend at least 2 days a week at home without leaving to run errands or grocery shop
Need to edit to say stay at home and CLEAN!
Lose the 20 lbs I gained in 2009
I'm finally back on the eating better wagon but that exercise wagon is elusive.
Blog daily and keep in touch with extended family and friends
Blogging sporadically and not keeping in touch much.
Make time to Be Still & Ponder each day
I need to get up earlier than everyone else because otherwise there is no such thing as quiet time around here.
Start doing family history work
This was an obsession for a few months earlier this year but then I ended up with so many names needing work done I need to focus on getting the names I cleared done before submitting anymore.
Weekly date with Brian
We went out on his birthday this past week but I should plan something for this week and surprise him - except that he reads this blog so now there will be no surprise ;-)

Well enough rambling for today. I'm sure there is no one left reading at this point but since this blog is for me that's ok. It was theraputic for me to put a few thoughts down and regroup to tackle this week ahead of me.

2009 Goals - Resolutions

Time to Review my goals from 2009 - Some successes and some failures.

Kathy's Goals for 2009
Have a "Perfect Year" - Perfect Year = kneeling prayers every morning and night & read my scriptures everyday

FAIL - The first half of my year was perfect but the second half was not even close!

Attend the Temple at least once every month

FAIL - Good start, good finish but a terrible middle

Read the Ensign cover to cover each month

Verdict is still out - I will finish up December and then get through the Conference Ensign soon, I just didn't make it by year end.

Be early to church each week - Leave home no later than 9:15 each Sunday

Success - We weren't always 15 minutes early but we were always in our seats before the meeting started.

Read at least 52 books

SUCCESS! - I read 114 books!

Get on top of and stay on top of the house by making sure the kids are doing their chores & I am keeping up with my "Tackle it" goals/projects each day

HMMM??? - Some weeks were good, some weeks were horrible. We did end 2009 with a clean house!

Keep my body healthy by maintaining my weight, eating healthy and exercising, remain motivated by working with friends to meet my goal

EPIC FAILURE! - I gained back everything I had lost, ate crappy and quit exercising all together.

Keep in touch with extended family & friends through blogging, letters, emails and phone calls

Some Success, Some Failure - I did keep up on my blog and I did send some emails to some family and friends but not what I had envisioned when I set this goal.

Make time to Be Still & Ponder each day

FAILURE - My husband is fabulous at this. He spends the first 30 minutes of each day studying and pondering. I however didn't make the time I should to be still.

Get in the habit of listening to uplifting music each day by turning on LDS radio, a CD or itunes each day

FAIL -I'm so disappointed that LDS Radio quit broadcasting. I used to listen to it every time I was in the car. Once the quit broadcasting I quit listening to LDS music.

Be a better mother & wife by spending quality one on one time with my children & husband regularly & not raising my voice so the spirit can be in our home

Hmmmm? - I did rotate through my children on weekly dates and was pretty got about weekly dates with Brian but I could have definitely been better! Not raising my voice = FAIL my kids listen so much better when I'm yelling!

Focus on the good & don't judge others
Success - Did fairly well on this one.

Read The Entire Book of Mormon Together As A Family In 1 Year
SUCCESS! - We finished at 11 pm last night

Have Family Prayers Together Every Morning and Night
Mostly Success - We do really well at night but struggle a little in the morning

Have a Lesson Each Week During Family Home Evening
SUCCESS - We didn't have a lesson every single week but we did have FHE every week.

Family Fun Night
SUCCESS We did a lot of fun things together as a family this year although it wasn't always on Friday nights as planned.

Eat Dinner & Breakfast Together As A Family
FAILURE - Breakfast did well until the new school year - Kids leave at too many different times to make it worth it now.
SUCCESS - Dinner - Had dinner together the majority of nights.

Bedtimes
FAILURE

Media - Video Gaming
MAJOR FAILURE - My kids play way too many video games and watch way too much TV.

Chores
MIXED - We had good weeks and bad weeks.

My year started off well and then sort of started sliding downhill. The beginning of the year is a great time to reevaluate where I'm at and recommit to some things I'm not consistent on. Within the next few days I'll get my 2010 goals set and posted

21 Days to Make a Habit...

So is there any truth to that statement. My mom used to say it something like 21 days to make a habit and only 1 day to break it.
I've decided every 3 or 4 weeks I am going to review my goals, recommit to them and adjust them as needed. This is a post mainly just for me.

Family Goals
Read the Book of Mormon together as a family in 1 year. So far were kicking butt on this goal. Today we will read 1 Nephi chapter 17, well the first part of it anyway. We are also reading a section out of For The Strength Of Youth each day.

Have Family Prayer Together Every Morning and Night. We're doing well on this one too. Weekends are harder but we're doing great on weekdays.

Have a Lesson Each Week During Family Home Evening. Check! Here is a funny thing. We were reading an article in the friend a couple weeks ago for our lesson. At the end of the page it said.... To be continuted. Huh? Never had that happen while reading the Friend. When the February friend arrived this week Bradley was excited and said now we can hear the end of the story.

Family Fun Night each week.
We've reinstituted our family fun night. We've friends over to join us twice this month. I think the kids enjoy these nights.

Eat Dinner & Breakfast Together
Again we do well on week days. Weekends seem to be harder.

Bedtimes
We've actually pushed bedtime earlier. It had been they had to be downstairs and quiet by 9:30 and now it is 9:00. I've been getting up too early to have the kids up any later than that. I've been reading a great book that talked about Parent Hour. At 9:00 the kids have to be out of the way for parent hour where mom and dad have alone time. Great idea!

Media
Really struggling with this one! We have 4 computers all networked together and most days after school I have half the neighborhood at my home and a bunch of boys in the office playing on the computers. So between computer time and TV I know my kids are spending over 2 hours a day on media. I just listened to a great talk by John Bytheway called Turn Off the TV and Get a Life. I'm committed to do better in this area.

Chores
Some days we work first than play... I'm going to try to be better at making that EVERYDAY we work first then play. It's easier to just do things myself sometimes but that doesn't help them learn.

Personal Goals
Have a Perfect Year = kneeling prayers every morning and night & read my scriptures everyday - been doing good on this one so far. It's probably the single most important things I've done. There is a lot of truth to putting first things first and if you do other things will fall into place and you'll have time for them.
Attend the Temple at least once every month - Brian and I went to ward temple night.
Read the Ensign cover to cover each month - I've read Januarys and will finish February's today or tomorrow. I'm staring to really love the Ensign!
Be early to church each week - Thanks to Brett having to be to church half an hour early to set up chairs we are doing really well on this one.
Read at least 52 books - I've upped this goal to at least 100 books this year!
Get on top of and stay on top of the house by making sure the kids are doing their chores & I am keeping up with my "Tackle it" goals/projects each day - Struggling here a little. I can never seem to keep it clean for long. And there is always more laundry, more dishes, more clutter... it never ends.
Keep my body healthy by maintaining my weight, eating healthy and exercising, remain motivated by working with friends to meet my goal - Doing great on this one.
Keep in touch with extended family & friends through blogging, letters, emails and phone calls - I could definately be better here. I did write my grandma and I do keep up with my blog but I'm lacking in the other areas.
Make time to Be Still & Ponder each day - I struggle to find quiet time and to take the time to just think and ponder.
Get in the habit of listening to uplifting music each day by turning on LDS radio, a CD or itunes each day - I've done this somedays. On other days I've been trying to listen to audio CDs of church talks.
Be a better mother & wife by spending quality one on one time with my children & husband regularly & not raising my voice so the spirit can be in our home - Stuggling but working on it. Brian & I have been going on our weekly date but I need to take more one on one time with the kids and work on speaking to them in a better tone.
Focus on the good & don't judge others - Doing my best.

Healthy Living - Before Pictures

So you know those before and after pictures people take before starting a workout or diet. I took some today. I've never done it before because posing in front of a camera, in a swimsuit is not my idea of a good time! As part of the challenge I am taking part in we are doing before and after measurements. For the 12 week challenge I finished a couple weeks ago we were encouraged to take before pictures but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I finally got up the nerve to take them today....but fortunately for all of you .... I'm not sharing them! But in 6 weeks it will be interesting to see if Slim in 6 can live up to it's promises! Tiff & I are going to be working out together (well as well as we can living across the country from each other) and we'll hopefully keep each other motivated. Hopefully my after pictures will look half as good as hers do!BTW - I did Ramp It Up today and survived! I've started my modified fast and am excited to start this program in earnest on Monday!

Celebrating!!!

Today is the last day of the Healthy Living Challenge I took part in. I'm happy to report I met almost every one of the goals I set! The only thing I didn't do was go the full 12 weeks without sugar or flour. I only made it 10 weeks on that goal. Although there were only 2 days in 12 weeks that I messed that goal up!

I lost 15 lbs total & a quite a few inches!
Inches lost:
Calf - .75 inches
Thighs - 2 inches
Hips - 2 inches
Abs - 2 inches
Waist - 2 inches
Chest - 1.5 inches
Arms - .75 inches

In this challenge we earned points based on the following:
3 Workout points: - 20 minutes = 1 point- 4o minutes = 2 points- 60 minutes or more = 3 points
1 For reporting in
1 Water - 8 - 8oz cups or more a day
1 Supplements - take a good multi vitamin!
1 Whole Grains - No white flour, white pasta, etc
1 NO SKIPPING MEALS OR SNACKS!!!
1 No sugar - No sugar, no junk!
1 3-hour rule - Don't eat for at least 3 hours before you go to bed.

I averaged 8.9 points per day for 12 weeks!

I'm going to enjoy the next 2 weeks using moderation in what I eat and then am starting another challenge on January 5th! Anyone else want to join me? It may not be easy but it sure is worth it!

Confession Time... I blew it!

I guess I shouldn't beat myself up too badly but I blew it tonight. I've gone without white sugar or white flour for 10 weeks. My goal was to go 12 weeks but I was weak tonight and ate half a piece of Amish Friendship Bread which is mostly white flour & white sugar. It sure did taste good but man the guilt for not making it 2 more weeks....
I've been taking part in a Healthy Living Challenge for the past 10 weeks. I have 2 weeks more to go until the contest ends. I set a goal to get 750 points during the contest and I only have 113 points left to earn. I've averaged 63 points a weeks so barring any illness I should make my goal. I also had a goal to lose 15 lbs and this morning I weighed in at my goal weight. My weight fluctuates a lot from day to day so I might not weigh in consistent yet but I'm close and have 13 days left so I'm confident I'll make it.
Thanks to my awesome friends who helped keep me accountable and motivated! Jenny, Tiff, Rhonda, Britten, Lisa, Nicole, Jen, Amy, Meg, Kendra & Mary Ann you are the best!

3 Workout points: - 20 minutes = 1 point- 4o minutes = 2 points- 60 minutes or more = 3 points

Mother It Monday - Work

Last night I sat down with each of the kids and had them set a goal. I told them I didn't care what it was brush their teeth, say their prayers, read, exercise, do a service for someone everyday.... They could pick whatever they wanted to work on. I had them make their own chart and told them if they kept track and reported back to me I'd pay them a dollar next week.

I've been thinking a lot about work. Keeping up with the house takes a lot of work. It lead me to think about what I am teaching my children. Sometimes it is just easier to do a task myself than to have to deal with the kids whining and complaining and having them doing a crappy job and hurrying just to get the job done. I know one of the welfare principles taught in our church is to teach children to work:

The foundation of self-reliance is hard work. Parents should teach their children that work is the prerequisite to achievement and success in every worthwhile endeavor.

Teach your young children to work, and teach them that honest labor develops dignity and self-respect. Help them to find pleasure in work and to feel the satisfaction that comes from a job well done.

~Joseph B. Wirthlin

So for my Mother It Monday task today I'm focusing on trying to teach my kids to work. They were each greeted as they came home from school with a list of jobs they had to do before playing the computer or playing with friends. Of course they resisted but I stood firm and they quickly got their jobs done. Hope I can keep this habit up because my kids need to learn to work!

Mother, Tackle, Wash, Thwart, Fix, Scour & Savor IT!

So I love Tackle it Tuesday. It so works for me. There are so many things I just don't get done and having just one project to take on has really worked for me. Unbelievable my office is still clean! It feels so great.

My good friend Yoga drove down to visit me on Saturday. After and early lunch at Durangos a couple hours of shopping and then a late lunch at Outback I left feeling rejuvenated. I love you Yoga and am so grateful you went out of your way to spend and afternoon with me!

One thing we discussed briefly was Tackle It Tuesday. Yoga had been trying to come up with something for the other days of the week. She'd come up with Wash It Wednesday and Fix it Friday. It got my brain going and I wanted to come up with something for each day of the week because I thrive with motivation and love the sense of having something that I can accomplish and be proud of.

After church today with the help of a dictionary I enlisted Brian and the kids to help me come up with something for everyday of the week.

So we already had:
Tackle it Tuesday - Tackle any project that you need to get done.
Wash it Wednesday - Dishes, Laundry, your car, the spots on your walls...Lots of possibilities for something that desperately needs washing.
Fix it Friday - Fix something that needs fixing, mend clothes, repair something, replace something that is broken, etc.

The remaining ideas come from my husband and children. We brainstormed and voted on them and this is what we came up with.

Mother It Monday - We had lots of ideas from Mend it to Make it to Move it to Muster it... but it was unanimous that Monday should be Mother It Monday - Do something to be a better mother, read a book, take a walk with the kids, a bike ride, go to the park, sit and talk... Anything to better my relationship with my children.

Thursday was nearly impossible to figure out! Throttle it, thrash it, throw it, thrice it, through it... Ultimately we decided upon Thwart it Thursday. The definition of thwart included: to oppose and defeat, to hinder or prevent. We decided on picking some area of the house needed to be defeated. Clutter or chaos or even bad habits in any form that need to be thwarted.

Scour it Saturday - Anything that needs scouring or to be clear or rid of what is undesirable. Some sort of deep cleaning task from the oven to the soap scum to anything that is needing a good cleaning and scrubbing.

Savor It Sunday - Obviously not a day of work but rather a day to reflect on all that is good in life. A time to appreciate and relish and enjoy what we have been blessed with. (Brett says we should call it Sit it Sunday so we can just "sit" and rest all day).

I don't promise to tackle all of these each week but my goal is to accomplish at least several of them each week. I know there will be days when simply meeting the basic needs of my family is all I will be able to accomplish. But I hope to be able to get a better handle on thing by simply setting a small goal each day and accomplishing it.

Amuse Me Monday

Fact: What is one thing you’d really like to accomplish in 2008? Will you do it?
I would like to lose another 7-10 lbs. Yes I am going to do it! Now to stay away from junk food...
